Corporate Profile

Tanga Cement PLC’s history and achievements can be summarized as below:

1970  National Development Corporation of Tanzania assigned the job of preparation of feasibility report for setting up a cement plant in Tanzania to French firm – Fives Lille-Cail

1978  Construction of the Tanga Cement PLC plant started.

Contractors involved:

  • FL Smidth & Company – Design, manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning.
  • Demoor Construction Company – Off loading, clearing and transportation of machinery from Tanga port to the plant site.
  • Ballast OC C of Holland (now known as TANCON) – Civil works
  • MECCO – Housing complex, access roads and rail way siding
  • MONJI RAMJI & Company – Construction of houses and community facilities in the township
  • MOWLEM Construction Company – Drilling soil for investigation
  • DEWETO International (Commissioned by FLS as sub-contractor) – Erection of Machinery and equipment.


1980
  The Tanga Cement PLC Plant was commissioned.

  •  Clinker Capacity – 500 000 tonnes per annum.
  •  Cement Capacity – 525 000 tonnes per annum (Due to production of OPC cement that required usage of 95% of clinker)
  •  Production rate – 1600 tonnes per day.
  •  Packing rate – 200 tonnes per hour
  • 22 November at 09H30 – The first Simba Cement bag was produced.
  •  12 December 1980 – The first dispatch of cement from the Plant.
  •  1st Export of 700 tonnes to Karachi, Pakistan

 Inputs for operation

  • 160 tonnes of Fuel Oil
  • 600kg of Explosive
  • 33 000 Paper bags for packaging
  • 80 tonnes of Gypsum
  • 2 500 tonnes of red soil
  • 800m3 of Water for the plant and township


1981  
  The Plant was officially inaugurated by H.E The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, the late J. K. Nyerere

1989    Holderbank signs Management contract to manage Tanga Cement PLC (the then Tanga Cement Company Limited)

1996  Privatization: Holcim Switzerland Limited bought 60% of the company’s shares. The remaining 40%, remained in ownership of the Government of Tanzania.

2001    ISO 9001 : 2000 Quality Management System

2002    Publicly Listed at the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange. Ownership was as follows:

  • Holcim Switzerland increased its ownership to 62.5%,
  • Tanzanians general public owned 32.5%.
  • Employees owned 5%

2004    ISO 14001 : 2004 Environmental Management System

2005    Presidential Environmental Award on Environmental Management

2007    Installation and Commissioning of Coal Mill

2009    Received an Award as overall winner for Best Presented Financial Statements from the National Board of Accountants and Auditors.

2009    Company ownership was as follows:

  • 62.5% Holcim Mauritius
  • 36.25% Tanzania General Public & Institutions
  • 0.75% Employees Share Trust
  • Production capacity increased from 750,000 tonnes per annum to more than 1,250,000 tonnes per annum to address market demand.

 2010  Received an Award as first winner for Best Presented Financial Statements from the National Board of Accountants and Auditors on manufacturing category.

 2010  Installation and commissioning of Cement Mill II and Packer III

  •  Cement Capacity increased to more than 1.25 million tonnes per annum
  • Cement Production rate – 3000 tonnes per day
  • Packing rate – 3600 tonnes per day
  • Export to Rwanda and Burundi went on.

     Inputs for operation

  • Coal – 235 tonnes per day
  • Fuel Oil – 5 tonnes per day
  • Explosive – 600 kg per day
  • Bags for packaging – 60 000 pieces per day
  • Gypsum – 160 tonnes per day
  • Red soil – 270 tonnes per day
  • Water – 1100m3 per day

2011   Received an Award as first winner for Best Presented Financial Statements from the National Board of Accountants and Auditors on manufacturing category.

2012   Received an Award as first winner for Best Presented Financial Statements from the National Board of Accountants and Auditors on manufacturing category.

2012   Company Share Ownership

  • 62.5%  –  AfriSam Mauritius
  • 36.4% – Tanzania Public Institutions and individuals
  • 1.10% – Registered Trustees of Tanga Cement Company Limited

2013    Received an Award as overall winner for Best Presented Financial Statements from the National Board of Accountants and Auditors.

2013   ISO 9001: 2008 Quality Management System after re-certification audit

2013   Ground breaking for construction of Kiln II, another expansion in the company history.

2015   Received an Award as overall winner for Best Presented Financial Statements from the National Board of Accountants and Auditors.

2016   Received an Award as overall winner for Best Presented Financial Statements from the National Board of Accountants and Auditors.

2016   Installation and commissioning of Kiln II which increased clinker production capacity to more than 1.25 million tonnes per annum.

To date: Company Share Ownership is as follows:

  • 68.3% – AfriSam Mauritius
  • 31.7% – Tanzania Public Institutions and individuals
