Tanga Cement Company Limited was commissioned in 1980 and built largely from funds donated by Danish Government. In 1989 Holcim, the world's second largest cement company, took over a contract to manage Tanga Cement Company.
In 1996 Holcim Mauritius successfully acquired the majority share of the company. Today, Holcim Mauritius holds 62.5% of the Company with 36.9% being owned by Tanzania General Public and Institutions and 0.6% being owned by the Tanga Cement Employees' Share Trust.
